Opioid Overdoses or Suicides?

In the midst of the opioid epidemic, suicide rates have hit a 30-year high – is there a connection?

This was the question posed in a recent NPR article titled “How Many Opioid Overdoses Are Suicidal?” And it’s not the first (or last time) this relationship will be examined. In fact, there are several studies linking drug addiction and suicide. 

One study of nearly 5 million veterans found that diagnoses of opioid use disorders (OUD) led to an increased risk of suicide for both males and females. And women were eight times more likely to be at risk for suicide; men faced a twofold risk. What’s more, researchers found the suicide rate among those with OUD was 86.9/100,000, compared to the already alarming rate of 14/100,000 in the general U.S. population, notes the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Another study of 41,053 participants found that prescription opioid misuse was associated with anywhere between a 40 and 60 percent increased risk for thoughts of suicide, notes the NIDA. And those reporting at least weekly opioid misuse made suicide attempts at a rate 200 percent greater than those unaffected.

While researchers continue to study the link, there are still many unanswered questions. For instance, "no one has answered the chicken and egg [question]," Dr. Kiame Mahaniah, a family physician who runs the Lynn Community Health Center in Mass, told NPR. Is it that patients "have mental health issues that lead to addiction, or did a life of addiction then trigger mental health problems?"

For now, experts like Mahaniah say the best bet is to “provide treatment that covers all those bases."

The National Institute of Mental Health recommends seeking help as soon as possible if you or someone you know exhibits any of the following signs:
  • Threatening to hurt or kill oneself or talking about wanting to hurt or kill oneself
  • Looking for ways to kill oneself by seeking access to firearms, available pills, or other means
  • Talking or writing about death, dying, or suicide when these actions are out of the ordinary for the person
  • Feeling hopeless
  • Feeling rage or uncontrolled anger or seeking revenge
  • Acting reckless or engaging in risky activities - seemingly without thinking
  • Feeling trapped - like there's no way out
  • Increasing alcohol or drug use
  • Withdrawing from friends, family and society
  • Feeling anxious, agitated or unable to sleep or sleeping all the time
  • Experiencing dramatic mood changes
  • Seeing no reason for living or having no sense of purpose in life

Tips for Taking Charge of Your Mental Health

As we come to the end of Mental Illness Awareness Week, which takes place the first week of October to raise awareness and end stigma surrounding mental illness, we’re reminded of the importance of carving out time each day to care for our mental health. 

Addiction recovery in itself is overwhelming and can seem impossible if you’re struggling with a dual diagnosis of substance use disorder and mental illness. The following tips, adopted from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, can help you or someone you love find emotional balance as you weather the ups and downs of recovery.
  • Set aside time for yourself. Whether you read a book, go for a walk or get a massage, scheduling some “me” time into your day can help safeguard your mental health.
  • Identify your triggers. Ask yourself what things/situations make you feel anxious or agitated and then figure out ways to avoid or cope when possible. 
  • Manage your time. Time management is a crucial skill for recovery and good mental health. By prioritizing your activities and making schedules, you can avoid feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks and deadlines.
  • Get active: A recent landmark study found that just one hour of exercise can fend off depression. Whether you bike, jog or swim, the trick is to find what motivates you and then exercise will never feel like “working out,” notes the NAMI.
  • Eat right. People who eat a nutrient-dense diet have been found to be happier, according to NAMI. This means making an effort load up on fruits, vegetable, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, beans and nuts; limit fats and sugars; and drink plenty of water.
  • Prioritize sleep. Troubled sleep and poor mental health can turn into a vicious cycle, says the NAMI. For instance, someone with an anxiety disorder may feel too anxious to sleep and this could leave them frazzled the next day and increase levels of anxiety. 
  • Practice relaxation. Try deep breathing, yoga or meditation — whatever helps you step away from tension, quiet the mind and focus on the now.

Are You Getting the Depression Treatment You Need?

A new study of 46,417 adults, which was published in JAMA Internal Medicine this week, found that the majority of people with clinical depression aren’t getting treatment. In fact, among the 8.4 percent of study participants who screened positive for depression, only 28.7 percent received any depression treatment at all. 

Researchers also discovered that many people getting treatment may not even need it: Only 29.9% of adults treated for depression actually screened positive for depression and 21.8% for serious psychological distress.

So what’s the solution? Researchers are urging general practitioners to be more vigilant about identifying symptoms of depression and referring patients to mental healthcare providers. 

Spotting the Signs of Depression
You can also play a vital role in protecting your mental health. Recognizing depression early and taking action is the best way to minimize the physical and emotional damage of depression. And it’s especially important if you’re struggling with depression and substance abuse disorder. 

Both, after all, still carry a stigma, which can prevent those who really need help from getting it. Studies also show that people with co-occurring disorders are less likely to comply with treatment, leading to more psychiatric hospitalizations, attempted suicides, and other complications.

7 Ways to Ease Anxiety

Unfortunately, there’s a lot of overlap between addiction and anxiety disorders. About 20 percent of Americans with an anxiety or mood disorder (like depression) have an alcohol or substance use disorder, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA). And it works the other way, too: About 20 percent of those with an alcohol or substance use disorder also have an anxiety or mood disorder. 

In an effort to cope with symptoms of anxiety, many individuals try to self-medicate and alleviate symptoms. This attempt, however, backfires as drugs and alcohol actually worsen the symptoms of anxiety. The good news is that there are many things you can do to help yourself cope with anxiety and feel better. 

Try these calming strategies adopted from the ADAA.
  • Write down your anxiety triggers. Is it work, family, school, or something specific you can identify? Keep a record of the times you’re feeling anxious, and then try to identify any patterns.
  • Find your Zen. Practice yoga, listen to music, meditate, get a massage, or go for a hike. Figure out what helps you clear your head and keep calm.
  • Put stress in perspective. Ask yourself, “Is it really as bad as I think?”
  • Let yourself laugh. A good guffaw has a lot of healing power and even the mere anticipation of a humorous event can help reduce your body’s stress hormones.
  • Focus on your breath. Sit with your eyes closed and turn your attention to your breathing. Inhale slowly and exhale slowly. 
  • Cut back on sugar and caffeine, which have both been shown to trigger anxiety and panic attacks.
  • Don't hold it in. Tell friends and family you’re feeling anxious and overwhelmed, or seek professional help.
